MANIFESTO of SMALL

Small is not insignificant. Small carries weight. Small can hold the image of something enormous.

Small is a lens. Shift the scale and mountains turn into snow globes. Statues into tchotchkes. Assemble the world at a reduced size, precise enough to enter, unstable enough to doubt. Small is not always trustworthy.

Small is a memory, a model. Train sets circling a vanished industry. Reconstructions of ruins. Small reflects us back to ourselves: our habits, our desires, our hierarchies, all shrunk down. The illusion of control.

Small displays desire. Dollhouses stocked with furniture. Miniature cars we cannot afford. Ownership simulated. A tiny theater of acquisition.

Small envisions the future. Architectural models. Urban plans. Possibilities arranged, revised, and reconsidered before they arrive at full scale.

Small is a method of understanding. A way of holding complexity. Scale organizes attention.

Small is a fantasy of control. But small can refuse fantasy. Small can turn back toward the world that produced it. A study of what already exists. Systems reduced, held still long enough to be questioned.

Build small by hand.

Another scale is possible.
